Nathan Walsh
CEO and Co-Founder, Athena Home Loans

I am Co-founder & CEO of the home loan start-up Athena, Australia’s innovative new digital mortgage platform. A fintech entrepreneur with over 20 years’ expertise in financial services, top-tier consulting and legal practice, I am passionate about establishing and evolving innovative businesses that leverage the power of technology to provide enriching customer experiences. I combine a background in banking, after many years at NAB and Citigroup, with experience in launching successful fintechs. I founded nabtrade, NAB’s digital investing platform, and led the business from initial idea, right through to delivering Australia’s best investing experience. Experienced in leading businesses through the full cycle of start-up, scale and maturation, I understand the dynamics of taking a vision to successful execution in complex, regulated environments. Seeing a broken mortgage system, my co-founder Michael Starkey and I had a vision to reinvent the home loan model in Australia. We saw a river of money flowing from superannuation into banks – ultimately funding Australian mortgages. Finding a way to by-pass the banks and give home loan borrowers and investors a better deal, we decided to start Athena. Our mission is to save Australians a lot of money by helping them pay off their home loan faster. About Athena Backed by a number of leading financiers including Macquarie Bank, HostPlus, Square Peg, AirTree and Apex, Athena is here to help Australians pay off their home loan faster. Athena was founded in June 2017, pulled together a wickedly talented team, and launched February 2019 to revolutionise the home loans industry and make it better in every way. Athena built an innovative digital home loan platform to deliver savings to borrowers, backed by local local home loan experts seven days a week, stay-great rates, and a lender that looks to reward you, not sting you… Athena is here to lighten the loan.
